The winter check for your pond

Here are some tips on how to make your pond fit for the Winter:
- Remove any excess waste from the pond, including silt, sludge, leaves etc., using a fine net or an OASE Pondovac 3.
- If your pump is less than 0.5m deep in the pond, it should be removed, cleaned and stored in a bucket of water in a frost free environment, such as your garage.
- The filter system can be drained and cleaned once the water temperature has dipped below 10 degrees centigrade as the biological activity in the filter will have stopped.
- Floating Lights can remain in the pond throughout the Winter, as they are unaffected by frost and ice, and can help to ensure an area of the pond stays ice free. Alternatively, ice preventors can be used to allow essential gas exchange to take place.
An air pump can also be used in winter months to stop the pond freezing over and trapping harmful gases and substances, which can be very harmful to fish.

"I contacted you today (Sunday 10 Apr, 2011) and purchased a Bemuda 18000 filter pump. All I am writing for is just to say thank you for your help and guidance and just to say what a relief it was to be given some straight forward info from someone who certainly seemed to know what he was talking about. Also, while I’m here, I’d just like to say that your website is first class. I’m just sorry that we live in Nottingham and that your centre isn’t close by. However, a drive over is a definitely on the agenda. Thanks again. David Smith & Holden."..."The pump arrived yesterday and is now installed and working just fine. Glad we took your advice about the power, the flow is perfect."
